WHAT IS A GENERATOR LOAD BANK AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
A load bank is a self-contained device that simulates a real-world load to test how much electrical energy a generator can handle. The operator can double-check that the generator will function in an emergency. The test also exercises the generator to promote activity and reduce decay. Regular testing can also prevent wet stacking on diesel generators so that soot does not build within the system.
Regularly testing a generator is often a regulatory requirement from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulation 110 (NFPA 110-2019) and the National Electric Code (NEC) 700. Any facility requiring a level 1 emergency power supply system (EPSS) to prevent loss or harm to human life must regularly test its systems. A level 2 EPSS that does not protect human life also needs testing since these are mission-critical facilities.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TEST A LOAD BANK?
There are specific federal government requirements that explain how often you need to test a generator depending on the EPSS classification, the minimum number of system uptime hours and the number of seconds it takes for the generator to activate.
For example, hospitals or health care facilities with generators that power life-saving equipment require monthly 30 minute tests and tests up to four hours every three years. It’s often necessary to test a diesel generator with a light load to prevent wet stacking more frequently than once a month.
HOW TO CONNECT A LOAD BANK WITH A GENERATOR
Depending on the generator’s function, there are several distinct methods for hooking up a load bank to a generator. The three main approaches include:
- Manual transfer switch: The operator connects the generator and the load bank at test time.
- Automatic connection: The load bank has a circuit breaker that connects the bank and the generator. During the load test, the load bank turns off with a signal from the automatic transfer switch and removes the load from the power generator.
- Permanent connection: The load bank has a permanent link to the generator so that it senses the building load and performs the test on its own automatically.
