Meeting the National Electric Code (NEC) 700.3(F) standards for temporary sources of emergency power is critical to ensuring full compliance and safety for your facility. At Trystar, we offer optimized systems to help you stay compliant and meet temporary or emergency power supply needs. Our temporary power sources can help deliver the electricity you need to keep vital operational systems running during routine system maintenance or in unforeseen circumstances.
To help you understand the NEC 700.3 terms and how to meet them adequately, we’ve covered some key points about the standard below.
WHAT IS THE NEC 700.3?
As part of the 2017 National Electrical Code® (NEC®) from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the NFPA 700.3 provision outlines criteria for temporary power sources. The standard for the 700.3(F) applies to legally required emergency power systems.
In short, it stipulates that you must install a permanent means to connect to an alternate power source if your primary source is unavailable while undergoing maintenance or repairs. You should have a permanent switching option available at all times to connect to your temporary or portable power source. By meeting this requirement, you give your facility a fast and safe way to engage your temporary power source when your primary source goes offline for maintenance.
NEC 700.3(F) TERMS AND REQUIREMENTS
The NEC 700.3(F) terms specify that a temporary power source must meet these conditions:
- Connecting to the temporary power source must not require permanent system wiring modifications.
- Transferring power from the primary to the emergency source must take no more than 10 seconds (in compliance with NEC 700.12).
- Electrical interlocking in the system must prevent accidental power source connection.
- The switch between power sources should include a contact point, remote from the generator, to indicate that the emergency source is disconnected from the system. A manual switch is an approved means to transfer power draw to the temporary source.
HOW NEC 700.3 WORKS IN THE INDUSTRY
Having a permanent power source connection available for rapid transfer is necessary across operations that must use temporary power to keep vital processes running when a primary power source is unavailable. These include:
- Places of large assembly, such as theaters, sports arenas, hotels and large shopping centers
- Healthcare institutions
- Public safety communications resources
- Industrial facilities with critical operations that could create serious safety hazards if interrupted
With the wide range of technologies available for power system management, you have several options for complying with these requirements. A Trystar generator docking station can help facilitate a smooth, fast transfer of power from the primary source to the portable or temporary source, ensuring the facility follows NEC 700.3 guidelines.
