On The Road With The “GridPak”

As an innovative, reliable electrical power generation solution with zero CO2 emissions, the GridPak is Trystar’s introductory product in the portable, commercial power generation market. Designed to assist customers with meeting their carbon emission reduction targets, the GridPak is an alternative to a portable commercial diesel- or gasoline-powered generator. Comprised of a formidable solar array, battery energy storage system (BESS), and LP-fueled backup generator, the GridPak is a self-contained compact trailer … easily towed by a heavy-duty pickup truck for use at outdoor events, in natural disaster restoration efforts, and in remote, off-grid locations.

Department Of Transportation approved and road-ready, the GridPak’s robust, heavy-duty design enables it to be towed by a 1-ton pickup truck, at highway speeds and for long distances. GridPak is ideal for outdoor applications which require portable, reliable, and renewable power including:

Trystar’s “GridPak” … A Portable, Solar-Powered Renewable Energy Solution

Upon arrival at its destination, the GridPak is quickly and easily setup … fully deploying in four (4) easy steps in about 15 minutes, and does not require any skill set or tools! The operator controls enable the leveling feet to extend and anchor firmly to the ground; and the solar panels unfold, lock into position, and then automatically track the sun angle for optimum solar efficiency. Easily-accessible output connectors allow the operator to connect the load(s).

Depending upon the application, GridPak can be specified to provide 60 kWH or 120 kWH of battery energy storage, with an option for 180 kWH. Yet power is always available, because the solar panels constantly charge the batteries. During inclement weather or in heavy overcast skies, the GridPak’s LP powered genset will also keep the batteries charged. When additional power is required, external shore power charging is available for each unit, and up to four (4) GridPak units can be configured together to support complex applications.

GridPak Roadshow: Behind The Scenes

Since its inception and market launch, Trystar’s GridPak demonstration model has embarked on an application roadshow … highlighting its capabilities while providing functional application support in real-time. Whether used for commercial or utility applications, GridPak is a premiere renewable and portable energy solution for utilities, construction sites, remote locations, events and entertainment venues, and rural/farm backup power. Below is a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the many types of portable electrical support that the GridPak has provided:

Music Festival — Chicago IL

GridPak powered a 2.5 ton HVAC unit to provide air conditioning within a branded pop-up beverage lounge.

Recharge America / ElectriFUN — Faribault MN

Located in the parking lot of Trystar’s Faribault manufacturing facility, GridPak powered the A/V equipment for ElectriFUN attendees, while enhancing Trystar’s market position in electrification and EV transportation.

Two (2) Utility Applications In Rural Southern Minnesota

In two (2) separate applications, GridPak provided both residential and commercial electrical power. In one application, GridPak provided backup power to the home, as well as provided lighting in the barn and powered the water pumping system for the livestock. Another day, both GridPak and Trystar-made utility cable provided temporary power for the line workers updating a transformer, as well as provided backup power to a residence.

3M Open PGA Golf Tournament — Blaine MN

As shown in the image on the right, the GridPak provided six (6) days of continuous power for the A/C system, computers, monitors, and radio communications within a 400 square foot portable construction office for the event and parking staff.

Steele County Fair — Owatonna MN

Throughout the week-long Steele County Fair, the largest and well-attended county fair in Minnesota, the GridPak powered HVAC and commercial cash registers in event tents, as well as a bounce-house and other children’s events.

United States Forest Service / Flathead National Forest — Kalispell MT

In a field trial with the U.S. Forest Service, the GridPak powered the portable HVAC systems, digital equipment, electronics, lighting, and small appliances in three (3) yurts (tents) which were configured in a manner consistent with housing fire fighters. See the image to the left.

DTE Energy Technical Training Center — Westland MI

At a training certification event for DTE Energy employees, GridPak simultaneously powered the
Level 2 EV ChargingPak (another Trystar renewable energy solution) for DTE’s Ford “Lightning” EV pickup trucks, as well as an entertainment trailer for employees’ families and event attendees.

The system was deployed and placed into operation within fifteen (15) minutes after being transported approximately 650 miles.

Trystar’s Validation & Simulation Assessment — Faribault MN to Houston TX

GridPak’s most-recent application was a technical and structural validation and simulation exercise. Driving a heavy-duty 1-ton pickup truck, Trystar’s engineers towed the GridPak at highway speeds on southbound I-35 from the company’s Faribault MN headquarters to its Houston TX facility … 1,183 miles, and about 17 road hours. The team verified that the GridPak trailer’s robust industrial design flawlessly accommodated the typical highway standards for trailer tire temperatures and wheel bearing durability, both of which ensure the safety of the GridPak during travel as well as its performance upon arrival at its destination. Adherence to these standards not only ensures a smoother and reliable journey on the road, but also extends the lifespan of the GridPak trailer and its components. Upon its arrival at the company’s Houston site, the GridPak was quickly deployed and was ready to go … absorbing and storing solar energy in its onboard BESS!
